Hello again friends!
Here are my audio selections this week that have been keeping me inspired and entertained while drawing. Check them out with a critical yet open mind and enjoy!
“…If there was only one name that could be included in the art history books to represent street art and youth culture at the turn of the century, Shepard Fairey would be it. From a few wheat pasted posters and a posse rallied around Andre The Giant, Shepard Fairey became a household name in a matter of years by sharing his punk rock ethics with the world and creating iconic imagery opposing the powers that be. The only problem is that fame comes at a cost on both a personal and professional level and this interview takes you behind the hype and inside the mind of a cultural icon who’s been on both sides of the coin. From doing time to calls from the Commander In Chief himself to spearheading the next steps in social justice, Shepard Fairey’s true story reveals a focused and humble creative using his influence to better the world he came from and the world he wants to live in….”
I had a blast listening to this interview! Shepard Fairey’s work has paved the way for graphic artists like myself working today and Mark Brickey did an incredible job diving deep into the mind of this undeniable, cultural icon. This is also a full, free episode. Drop what you are doing and Listen now!
“…Illustrating psilocybin’s healthful properties, now acknowledged by mainstream science, Powell describes his activism in the fight to keep psilocybin mushroom use legal in the UK and shows that an irrational rejection of scientific evidence underlies the harsh war against psychedelic states of consciousness. Laying the groundwork for a new relationship with our biosphere, Powell shows how the Earth’s psychedelic medicines can reconnect us to the spirituality and wisdom of Nature and bring the human race back from the brink of ecological and existential disaster….”
I’ve heard a lot of authors talk about the experiences and benefits of plant medicine for personal growth and global healing and the way Simon articulates himself in this interview is on another level. If you are curious about psilocybin and the scientific research going on, this interview is a great place to start. Simon has also produced some quirky YouTube videos like this one that serve as companions to his book. I found this video to be highly entertaining as it seems to be booth serious and tongue and cheek at the same time, because as he states at the beginning, he spent almost no money producing it. It’s shot kind of like a nature documentary you would have watched in your high school science class during the 90’s. Eat some weed and enjoy:)
“Writing with great warmth and clarity, Tara Brach brings her teachings alive through personal stories and case histories, fresh interpretations of Buddhist tales, and guided meditations. Step by step, she leads us to trust our innate goodness, showing how we can develop the balance of clear-sightedness and compassion that is the essence of Radical Acceptance. Radical Acceptance does not mean self-indulgence or passivity. Instead it empowers genuine change: healing fear and shame and helping to build loving, authentic relationships. When we stop being at war with ourselves, we are free to live fully every precious moment of our lives.”
I’ve been listening to Tara Brach’s Buddhist teachings and guided meditations for years now via her podcast and and am thrilled to share her work with you guys here. Tara is also a licensed, practicing psychologist who’s grasp of the human mind that is second to none. I find her talks highly motivating and therapeutic and this book is nothing short of a masterpiece. I’m always searching for tools to eliminate fear and anxiety and this book is packed with them! I’ve found Buddhism to be more equivalent to brain science than religion as I previously knew it, so don’t let that stigma turn you off to it.
Give this debut album a try if you dig atmospheric, mellowly energetic sounds, infused with hints of 90’s grunge and insightful lyrics. ‘Motley Crue’ is my favorite track form the album.
